MEDICAL By modernagetv / March 6, 2019 Share Tweet Pin Share Share I have been curious about medical cannabis for many years. I’ve read articles and watched videos about it being ‘miracle medicine.’ I’ve heard it has great results for patients with Parkinson’s, epilepsy, cancer, autoimmune diseases, pain management, and the list goes on. A friend introduced me to Dr. Chin and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to finally convince my mom that cannabis could potentially help her. Mom has suffered from Parkinson’s for 10 years now and it has gotten quite advanced — the stiffness, pain, slowing down of her digestive system, swallowing problems, speech problems, the list goes on. If you know anyone with Parkinson’s, you know what a horrific illness this is. Dr. Chin was kind enough to allow me to videotape the appointment so that you could have an inside peek into the world of medical cannabis. You’ll learn about the different ways to ingest it, how different states handle regulating it (New York is one of the toughest and most regulated), how it can help with Parkinson’s. Hopefully, the video will make you more curious and you will seek out more information on how it can possibly help you or your loved one. Note that the cannabis (CBD oil) that you see sold online does not have any THC (the stuff that makes you high). It’s great because it means it is accessible to most everyone but do know that it is not well-regulated at the moment so the truth is that you don’t truly know what you are getting. That said, there are a number of well-respected and solid brands out there now that are effective and that people trust. Just make sure to do your homework. When you get CBD prescribed to you, it is highly regulated so that you know exactly what you are getting. You can also have varying levels of THC depending on what is ailing you. But in order to get a prescription, you need to be an official card carrying medical marijuana program member. The way to get a card is to see a cannabis physician who will then diagnose you for one of the approved illnesses. 🙂 Modern Aging is all about sharing innovative and alternative approaches to caregiving and aging. JUNELLA CHIN For over a decade, Dr. Chin lived and practiced medicine in California, a state with legalized medical cannabis since 1996. In California, their integrative osteopathic clinic focused on children with intractable epilepsy, cancer, and autism. She has seen firsthand just how much medical cannabis can benefit patients. A Bronx native, who moved back to New York three years ago, Dr. Chin is now registered with the New York State Medical Cannabis Program. She is currently treating both children and adults in New York. Dr. Chin is a chronic pain survivor. Doctors suggested opiate pain medications, steroids, epidurals, and ultimately surgery to fuse the spine. As a result of her experience, Dr. Chin decided to dedicate her medical career in finding effective, integrative and holistic approaches to patient care. Dr. Chin is a frequent keynote speaker on the science and medicine of cannabis and has spoken at hospitals, conferences, and events all over the world.
